Fair Fashion Runway

October 13, 2024.

The Kweekcafé in Haarlem not stuffed with tables and chairs. It has also space for events, concerts and… for the first time a fashion show.

All activities and companies at the Haarlemmer Kweektuin, where Kweekcafé is located, are environmental friendly. Therefore the fashion show should support that. The businesses that participated just did that all in their own way.

Pluche has the best knitting patterns and wool to create your own warm sweater. Read more about the shop here. (in Dutch) If you look for design classics Nude Manifesto is the one stop shop for your new vintage Channel or Hermes! Check their insta! And.. check this TikTok!

If you don’t want to knit your own cloth and you are not into expensive brands, pre-owned closing might be a solution. Two shops represented the second hand market. Recycling shop Snuffelmug is a second hand shop which sells anything besides clothing. Pre-owned by Roos goes a step further. She goes through your wardrobe with you and helps select the pieces you don’t need anymore. Only worn once? You have five dresses in the same color? It looked cute, but is definitely not your color? Roos will sell it for you.

You can make new things and still be environmental friendly. Xpozai creates hats from recycled material. And Waye of Life runs with a mission. He picks up trash while doing it. For running events he doesn’t dress for the weather conditions. He wears his suite made out of locally sourced and handpicked cans and carries a matching the can flag. If you see a knight in shining armor at a marathon near you… it is Waye of Life.

There is another way to approach fair fashion. You can look how the material you use is created. Sas de Vries uses leather for her handmade bags. She only buys leather from factories who work as much environmental friendly as possible. Did the cows live close to the factory and are plant based techniques used to prepare the leather? Read more about her here and scroll down a bit. (Dutch only)

If you prefer to buy new cloth, no problem. You don’t have to search and check each brand yourself. Brandmission (interview in Dutch)and Tiesjurt do that for you!

It was great to see the variety of shops and creators who participated in the show and that you can choose for a more sustainable wardrobe.
